Design Spotlight: The Rothmier Project | Designed by Jared Caruso

When the Rothmiers in Littleton brought us their kitchen remodel, they were frustrated by its lack of continuity and flow. The area’s many small walls created a kitchen that felt segmented and choppy. Though challenging, we were able to transform the space (without removing or relocating any walls) into one that is highly cohesive in both form and function.

Designer Jared Caruso started by defining zones within the kitchen: food prep and serving, cooking, baking, and a bar. Visually, however, the spaces don’t read as separate areas, as the richly hued cabinets painted in a custom shade, Night Owl, wrap the kitchen in a continuous band of soft color.

Having an island was a top priority for the client, but as space was tight, it couldn’t be placed in the center of the kitchen. Installed at a right angle to the main space it still feels an integral part of the design and functions well as a seating and staging area, with the convenience of a prep sink at hand.

Neolith countertops were chosen not only for their enduring beauty and durability, but also for their sustainability. Made from a combination of minerals, clays, and feldspar heated and compacted together, Neolith “stone” is resistant to stains and heat, and has extremely low porosity, making it more difficult for bacteria to become trapped.

The timeless Hartford door style in Eclipse cabinetry, installed to ceiling height, works beautifully in this kitchen to create the sense of flow and connectedness desired by the client. Using cabinet panels on the refrigerator makes the appliance virtually disappear, keeping the unbroken line of color intact.

Back in the baking nook, gleaming double wall ovens wait for the next batch of cookies, and the microwave is close at hand for softening butter. The decision to carry the countertop material up the wall to form the splash adds to the pulled-together look.

Handsomely stained open shelving for cookbooks or dishes echoes that found in the wine chiller and the bar cabinets on the opposite wall.

The step-down area at the far end of the kitchen provides the ideal spot for a wet bar. Stained cabinets in Natural Walnut add character and distinguish the area as unique from the rest of the kitchen.

A dedicated sink at the bar means drinks can be prepped and served for party guests without getting in the way of dinner prep!

Easy patio access from the bar makes for convenient serving, as well.

Every inch of this kitchen remodel maximizes storage space, from the wealth of cabinetry to this unique recessed niche at the bar.
