4 Things to Consider When Choosing a Kitchen Sink

With hundreds of premanufactured sink choices available as well as endless custom options, knowing which kitchen sink to choose from can be challenging. Here are options to consider when choosing a kitchen sink.

Choose a sink that will work well for your needs and withstand years of daily use.

Size & Shape

The size of the countertop and your sink’s use will determine the size of the sink that you need. Typically, you have three options.

1. Single Basin 

Single basins are perfect for oversized pots and larger dishes.

2. Double Basin

Double basins provide room for separate tasks, such as washing and rinsing dishes. The basins can be the same sized, or you can have one bigger and one smaller.

3. Triple Basin

Triple bowl sinks are ideal for prep work. You often have a smaller basin between two larger ones.

Installation Type

The type of countertop you choose will often determine your sink’s installation type, but you do have options.

1. Drop-In Sinks

Drop-ins are one of the most common and popular types of sinks. This is also called a top mount sink.

2. Farmhouse Sinks

This type of sink has an apron font where the sink replaces the front edge of the countertop.

3. Flush-mount Sink

These are drop-in sinks that have been inset so that they are level with the countertop.

4. Integrated Sinks

An integrated sink is molded and part of the countertop.

5. Undermount Sinks

This type of sink is ideal for granite counters.

6. Bar Sinks

This is a much smaller sink and is installed in secondary spaces such as kitchen islands.

Material & Finish

The material and finish of your kitchen sink depend on style preferences and use. How you clean your sink will be determined by the material you choose.

1. Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is durable, scratch-resistant, and modern-looking. There are special stainless steel cleaners designed to keep the sink bright and remove water stops.

2. Copper

Copper is anti-microbial, making it easy to clean. The copper patinas over time, so when choosing copper, know that there will be more upkeep than with other materials.

3. Granite Composite

Granite is non-porous and durable. It resists scratches and chipping and is easy to clean.

4. Cast Iron

Cast iron sinks have a glossy porcelain finish and come in multiple colors. They can withstand high heat but may scratch over time.

5. Fireclay

Fireclay comes in multiple colors, similar to cast iron/porcelain sinks. They are durable and non-porous for easy cleaning.

Drain Placement

Another decision you will need to make when selecting your kitchen sink is drain placement. Generally, there are three options available.

1. Off-Center

An off-center drain is placed at the right or left of the sink basin and gives you more space under the cabinet. That space can be used for taller kitchen items or for a filtration system if one is desired.

2. Centered

Center drains are the most common type of drain and allow water to drain faster. A centered drain aligns with the center faucet and makes plumbing repairs easier because of accessibility to the pipes.

3. Rear Drain

The installation of a rear drain can be tricky, but they allow lots of room under the cabinet, and pans won’t blow the drain. Food prep is easier because you have more space in the basin.
