Before you begin your kitchen remodel, remember to account for resale value. Depending on how soon you intend to resell your home (if ever), certain trends may prove to be a poor investment. With that in mind, let’s take a look at which kitchen colors and designs are best for resale?
If you plan to sell in the near future, sticking with today’s kitchen trends probably won’t hurt your resale value. However, if you plan to sell your home way down the road, make sure you choose something a little more timeless. Buyers’ shock in 10 years’ time will likely reduce the selling point of your home.
Here are our design tips when planning for home resale.
Neutral colors never go out of style simply because you can do anything with them. While bright prints and colors come and go, neutrals continue to be the backbone of valuable homes. Another benefit is you can decorate your home however you want with the neutral undertones highlighting your decor.
Make sure you find a theme and stick with it. Neat, tidy, and bright describe a home prime for reselling. Try to keep rooms from looking busy, instead drawing the eye to natural focal points. Furniture arrangement plays a key role in a home’s uniformity.
One great way to draw the eye is to add a bit of contrast to your home. After all, uniformity doesn’t automatically equate to “boring.” Statement walls, contrasting throw pillows, colorful wall art, and unexpected patterns can all bring a delightful “contrast” to a room, spicing up its neutrality. The important thing is that the contrast is never permanent.
Of course, if you plan on staying in your home for the rest of your life, or you don’t mind a little renovation later, decorate to your heart’s content. Ultimately, your home should be as stylish, comfortable, fun, or colorful as you want it to be. Just make sure you examine the situation from every angle before settling on a theme or color scheme.
You can always repaint later, so don’t feel like you have to choose one of these colors. However, the following colors tend to work best for resale, and they look great in a kitchen any day of the week.
White
Shades of white tend to brighten and open up a room, emphasizing natural lighting and making a kitchen appear larger than it actually is.
Gray
A soft shade of gray is another neutral that isn’t quite as stark and bright as white. You can pair gray with contrasting accents to bring the perfect balance between happy and subdued to your kitchen.
Blue
Blue is a beautiful, calming color that looks great in any room, especially when paired with soft shades of white or yellow.
Red
The color red has long been a favorite color for kitchens, bringing a cheerful pep to everyone’s favorite room. Red also tends to “pop” on its own, meaning little decor or effort is required to make the kitchen seem more lively.
Yellow
Yellow is a naturally happy color, but make sure you choose the right shade for your kitchen’s lighting. If the shade is too dark or harsh, it can cause headaches and make the room look outdated. Yellow looks especially lovely with gray.
Green
If you want to be adventurous and steer away from the norm, look for a beautiful shade of green. If you go with a darker green, use white as an accent. If you go with a light sage green, the room will naturally appear brighter and more cheerful.
